5. Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is a stunning tribute to the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated as he attended a theatre performance. A mammoth statue of the seated president is surrounded by a Greek Doric style temple. The memorial was dedicated in 1922, with Lincoln’s last surviving son, Robert Todd, in attendance. Located at the west end of the National Mall, the memorial is where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I have a dream” speech in 1963. It also has been featured in several movies ranging from 1939’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to Nixon to an episode of the Simpsons. The memorial is open 24 hours a day, with National Park rangers on hand from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York. In 1886 American people got it as a gift from the French. Since that time the statue has been the symbol of freedom and of the United States.
The height of the Statue of Liberty is 93 metres (from ground level to torch). Visitors can admire the view of the harbour from its crown.
The White House
The White House is the official residence of the President of the USA. It is located in Washington. The building consists of 6 floors with different rooms including living space and halls for official receptions.
George Washington was the only American president who didn't live in the White House. When he was the President, the White House did not exist.
The White House was built in 1800. The famous Oval Office where the President of the USA works is located here.
Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls are located on the border between Canada and the USA. "Niagara Falls" is a common name for three waterfalls – the American Falls, the Horseshoe Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls .
Niagara Falls are not very high (53 metres) but very wide.
Every year thousands of people visit this scenic place. There is the Rainbow Bridge over the river which connects both countries. It is open for pedestrians.
The Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is a world-famous bridge over the Golden Gate strait. It is one of the most recognisable places in the world and the symbol of the USA.
Its length is 2,7 km . The bridge was built in 1937 and connects San-Francisco and Marin County.
The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world. Its depth is 1800 metres . It is located in Arizona on the territory of the national park. The length of the canyon is 446 km and its width varies from 6 to 29 km at the top and is less than 1 km at the bottom .
The Grand Canyon is a very picturesque place. Every year thousands of tourists come here. Nowadays visitors can admire the canyon from the observation point called "Grand Canyon Skywalk".
Times Square
Times Square is a square in the centre of Manhattan. It is not only the symbol of New York but the USA as well. Times Square is one of the most visited places of interest in the world. A lot of Broadway theatres are located in it. A lot of big companies also have their offices there.
Times Square is full of bright neon advertisement which makes it a very recognisable place.
The Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is a famous skyscraper in New York. This building was the tallest building in the world for a long time. It has 103 floors. There are two observation decks in the building (on floors 86 and 102).
The height of the building is 443 metres . 73 lifts serve it. The Empire State Building is designed in a simple but elegant style. It is one of the symbols of American culture. The Empire State Building is an office building.
Hollywood
Hollywood is a neighbourhood in Los Angeles. It is known as the home of the US film industry. A lot of film production studios are located here. For example, film studio "Paramount Pictures" is based in Hollywood. Many celebrities live in this neighbourhood.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame is also located in Hollywood. It comprises more than 2600 stars.

The United States Capitol is where Congress meets. Sessions of the Senate and House of Representatives are open to the public when the bodies are in session. Visitors need free passes, which can be obtained from their congressmen’s office. At the same time, they can also get passes to tour the Capitol building, as guided tours do not include visiting legislators in action. The Capitol was one of the first buildings constructed by the fledgling U.S. government following the Revolutionary War. Construction began in 1793, with legislators meeting there for the first time in 1800. Central to the Capitol building is the rotunda, which lies under the dome. Every year millions of people visit Washington in order to see its famous sights. The city was named after the first President of the USA, George Washington. He was the person who found the area to build the capital of USA. Washington spared some land from the states Maryland and Virginia and called the district Columbia.
There is also a separate state in the USA, called Washington, but it’s situated in the far west of the country, whereas the capital-city is in the east. So people call the capital Washington D.C. (District of Columbia), not to confuse it with the state.
Washington D.C. is divided into 4 districts: north-west, north-east, south-west, south-east. These districts have respectively numbered streets each. For example, First Street, Third Street etc. That way, it’s easy to define where you are. Washington is considered to be one of the most beautiful and unusual cities of the USA. It has no skyscrapers or tall building. There are only nice parks, squares, memorials, famous monuments and buildings which are no taller than 40 meters.
The best-known sights in the city are the Washington Memorial, which is a huge stone structure on the Potomac River, and the Lincoln Memorial, which is designed in a shape of Greek temple. The main buildings of the city are the Capitol and the White House. All tourists start their sightseeing tour from these constructions.
Moreover, there are some other places of interest in Washington. For example, the Senate Chamber, The Jefferson Memorial, the Hall of Representatives and the Library of Congress which holds millions of books and manuscripts.

Washington D.C. – is the capital of the USA. It is situated in the east of the country, on the bank of the river Potomac. A hundred square miles were taken from states of Maryland and Virginia. It was called the District of Columbia. The city is divided into four sections: NW, NE, SW, and SE. Numbered streets run north and south: First Street, Second Street … Lettered streets such as A-street, B-street run east and west. Bear in mind that every section has an independent street system. If you’re looking for Third Street, you need to know what section of the city it is in.

It is three blocks south of the White House. There is an elevator, which will carry you to 500-foot level observation windows.
Outside the city the Arlington National Cemetery is situated. John Kennedy was buried there. The famous Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is also situated there.
